Mary, 50 years old became a bread winner when her husband became bedridden 5 years ago. Since then, she has stood in as the mother and the father for her 5 children providing everything from food, school fees, medical care and other basic needs.
“When my husband became ill and bed ridden, I for sure didn’t know where to start from since at a time I was not working and had no source of income. We spent almost 3 years struggling and me together with some of my children had to take on casual work within the community to be able to get what to eat. It was until when I walked to our local women leader that she directed me to come to SustainME which marked a turning point in my life”-says Mary.
Mary further adds that through the business skills and a small startup loan that I received from SustainME, I was able to startup a retail shop which has since enabled me to earn a sustainable income helping me to provide a meal for my children, pay medical bills for my husband and care for my family. It would have been a sad story for me if it wasn’t for the support and intervention of SustainME. I am a proud woman now; my retail shop business has grown and now generates more profits. From the profits earned, I have been able to startup a piggery farming business which is also doing well.
